Like me, many jiu-jitsu practitioners tend to find themselves addicted to training. Lately though, I’m finding that I’m missing class or going to class with my mind on work or other non jiu-jitsu things. So today I feel like I’m going through some jiu-jitsu withdrawals. I’m all jittery and want to train. Jiu-Jittery, if you will. (ok, sorry about that).

Work is really strange right now. I’m busy negotiating a contract, in the process of starting my own business and trying to knock out a few freelance projects that have turned into marriages.

I was going to train tonight to help a friend get ready for a tournament on Saturday. I made the plans without remembering that I have a previous engagement because I have already missed a class this week and really want to train. I don’t mind missing a training session to hang out with family and get some good food going. It’s when I can’t stop working or thinking about work enough to focus on training.

I know that it’s all a part of life to get so busy that you can’t do something you really enjoy but man it sucks when you can’t get that gym time in, especially when people tell you that you missed an awesome class.

I guess it boils down to two things with me.

  1. I’m addicted to training.  I need to ease up on myself for not making class time.
  2. I work way too much. I need to make myself stop and take some time off.

Oh well, back to work.

  1. Ricky Gamboa Said,

i can very much relate to you. we all have to balance everything. what i do when i get depressed when i miss training is that i just think that it is not a race but a journey. we will all get to the top level but what is important is that we enjoy our way going there.

  2. admin Said,

Hey Ricky, thanks for visiting. I have missed way too much lately but I finally made it back to class tonight. I had some good rolls and was able to pull off the submissions in each one but I noticed that people are progressing so quickly without me. One thing I’ve found though is that I come into class fully expecting to be beaten. This seems to have helped me be more open to trying things, which one of my instructors always stresses.

So now I am going with the game plan that it doesnt matter if I lose. Instead, Im going to try things more often, regardless of the position that it puts me in.

I checked out your blog. Sorry to read about your first fights but you sound like your dedicated and Im sure we’ll see some winning vids on your blog in no time.

    Thanks again for the visit.

  3. Georgette Said,

I’ve felt the same thing. I read somewhere that when your body gets used to training on a regular basis it will suffer mild withdrawal from missing out on the endorphins. Back when I only trained M-F that by Saturday night I was cranky, jittery, and out of sorts, and couldn’t wait to get back to training. Now that I have a Saturday afternoon no-gi class, I find that Sunday is a much-enjoyed rest day.

Love your blog, looking forward to future posts :)
