Last night was an excellent class. There were only 5 of us that even showed up. The rain, I guess. We went through our techniques pretty quickly and then were released for about an hour of open mat. By the time I grabbed my mouthpiece, everybody else had paired up and started rolling. So I sat on the side and waited.
My instructor asked if I wanted to roll for a bit so I jumped at the chance. Oddly, I like to roll with people who are much better than me. It gives me a chance to check my defense and see if I am really soaking this stuff up.
We rolled about 8-9 times with him catching me each time but I feel pretty good about the defense that I did show. It made me realize where I set myself up for being submitted.
After rolling with him, I rolled with another guy who’s been training for a long time. We rolled about 5-6 times and it gave me another chance to see where I go wrong. My defense was pretty solid but I can see where I need to work.
Im always up for getting beat so I think it was an excellent class.

i love your attitude!!! if i didn’t know better i would swear that this was posted by one of my favorite students, Rollo, who basically says the same stuff all of the time! It’s funny how some people can take an attitude or aspect, normally thought to be negative (gettting submitted)and turn it into something really positive
like rollo, he actually keeps count of his wins & losses in the school, even though he is by no means ultra competetive, and keeps tabs on how and what happened…just so he can try to correct his defense. alot of times i have to tell some of the guys that beat him and come up with a cocky smirk “yeah, that’s good, but Rollo was 10 times more technical in getting submitted than you were in submitting him…so, how can you fix that…what is the difference between power & technique…you’ve been wrestling since you were 4 & he’s been grappling for 4 months. take the same technical approach to learning jiu jitsu that you did to learning how to wrestle and you will be phenomenal! either that or you can continue to power your way through guys who have only been grappling for a little while and then you will end up in the blue belt division, or even worse purple belt division, wondering how the hell you won so much as a white belt and why everyone has caught up?”
keep it up!
peace,
Jimmy
That is definitely the best attitude to have man! you are going to see your learning curve increase as long as you keep it up and keep up the intensity!
Power and strength are not that hard to get but its the technique that takes a long time to hone. Rolling with guys that are better than you, or bigger than you, or faster than you will always bring in new elements to your game! so keep it up and keep us posted on your progress!
